DIY ways to clean the couch of wine, coffee or food stains

lis  23

The couch is one of the most used pieces of furniture in the home.  In the living room, we spend most of our time watching TV together, welcoming guests or just relaxing. No wonder that the couch is often soiled and has stains from wine, tea or food. Here are some ways to tackle dirt on your couch.

Manufacturers make sure that the materials from which the sofas and corners are made are covered with protective layers, which allow you to remove stains only with a soft cloth together with warm water and a little washing-up liquid or washing powder. If the stain on the sofa bed is a result of spilled wine, coffee or juice, you must reach for stronger agents.

Quick reaction is our ally

Remember to act quickly. If there is a stain on the sofa or armchair, try to remove it as soon as possible, before the stain has penetrated the fabric structure. You can also choose a sofa made of WATER RESISTANT fabric. This material is covered with a protective layer that has properties that prevent the absorption of spilled liquids.

Use What You Have At Hand

If your sofa gets flooded with a drink and you don't have any stain removers for fabrics at home, use what you already have! Soda and lemon juice can be an effective cleaning agent on your sofa. In two litres of water, dissolve two teaspoons of baking soda and the squeezed juice of one lemon. Remember, however, to check that the mixture you have prepared will not discolour the material. On an invisible piece of couch, apply the solution and wait for a while.

Apply your prepared mixture to the stain with a cloth. Make sure the cloth is slightly damp. A cloth that is soaked too much can spread the stain over a larger area and cause worse stains. After each attempt to remove a stain from the couch, be sure to rinse the cloth thoroughly.

Potato starch can also be useful not only in the kitchen, but also for removing stains from the couch. Sprinkle a small amount of starch on the stain, then gently pat it into the stain. Wait for a while, then vacuum up the residue.

For red wine stains , soak up the excess liquid with a cloth or paper towel, then sprinkle with salt or baking soda. Leave the mixture on for an hour or two.

It is important  not to rub the stain all over the fabric! We must be very careful that the stain does not turn into hard-to-clean stains. Rubbing the dirt can damage the protective fibres of the fabric, making the stain absorb into the fabric and making the sofa less resistant to dirt.  Also remember to clean the stains on the sofa from the edge and work towards the center of the dirt, gently wiping up the liquid with the cloth.

Stain removers and cleaners

Shops offer a wide selection of upholstery cleaners and stain removers. On the market, we can find shampoos, stain removers, foams and dry preparations that will improve the process of removing stains from the couch. Although the manufacturers assure the effectiveness and harmlessness of their products, remember to apply a cleaning agent to an invisible part of the sofa before use to check whether the fabric is discoloured under the influence of chemicals. You can also use the services of a professional cleaning company, which will comprehensively take care of your sofa or corner sofa.

If you want to ensure that the sofa looks like new for a long time and does not lose its freshness, remember to vacuum the furniture frequently. You can also collect animal hair and dust with a clothes roller or with a wet latex glove.

The living room is the center of every apartment. It is in this room that we allow ourselves to rest, long conversations or extremely valuable time with the family. Therefore, it is worth taking care of the appearance of the sofa or corner, so that not only will they serve for many years, but also please the eye with freshness and beautiful appearance.
